Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. This is the story of a woman who is a very heavy drinker and has lost time, in particular the murder of someone. She rides the train every day, has names for the people in the houses she sees, even has imaginary lives for them, one of which happens to be the house she lived in with her husband who happens to live there now with his new wife. One of the people who she has gave a name is missing, from what she can tell, and she decides to investigate it.
I won’t say this is a bad book, it isn’t. It is a slow book then at the end just takes off and within a few pages you have it all wrapped up and just hear yourself saying out loud, ‘HUH?! That’s it??’
People compare it to ‘Gone Girl’ and I have to say as I haven’t read ‘Gone Girl’ I have no comment on this but I doubt I will read this book again however that does not mean I wont read anything else by Paula Hawkins.
